Greeva Vasti operates through Sweda (sweating) and falls under the Panchakarma strain of treatments. Sweda is performed with the help of warmed medicated oil held in a container and placed at the spot of discomfort on the back of the neck. This helps to relieve affected areas.

Kati vasti is very effective in lower back pain and stiffness. This is not just a therapy but a treatment for your spine. Therapy starts with the application of a warm herbal poultice after anointing oil. Luke warm oil is allowed to stay on the low back/upper back or neck for 30 minutes in a dam made with dough. The dough is prepared by using black gram flour or wheat flour.

Navarakizhi or Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda is a form of sweat-inducing massage treatment. It is used to improve muscle strength, and rejuvenate and re-energize body. Here, milk and rice are mainly used. Milk is a well known nutrient to us, so is rice.

Janu refers to the Knee joint and the surrounding area. Dhanyamladhara - streaming of medicinal liquid in Ayurveda. Dhanyamladhara which literally means a ‘dhara’ or pouring of a medicinal liquid called Dhanyamlam over the patient’s body. This herbal liquid is made of cereals with highly nutritious starch content like Navara rice or millet. This treatment is given to the diseases caused by the derangement of vata humour are treated with dhanyamla.

Dhanyamla Dhara is an Ayurvedic decoction bath, where a constant rhythmic stream of herbalised liquid is poured and massaged over the body. A relaxing treatment, it is used to support weight loss or detoxification programs.

The kashayadhara starts with pada pooja followed by gentle oil massage. The patient is laid in the supine position and from a certain height; lukewarm kashaya is poured in a particular rhythm by two trained therapists. Ksheera Dhooma is an effective and popular Ayurvedic procedure in which decoction of herbal medicines and cow's milk are mixed, heated and the emitted vapours are directed through a rubber tube. The steam coming out of the tube is applied to the whole body or the affected part of the patient's body.

“Lepam” is the local application of herbal paste. Lepam absorbs the swelling and inflammation from the affected part transdermally. Herbs chosen according to the condition are powdered, made into a paste by mixing with a suitable medium like decoction, water or egg white and applied over the affected part.

Nasyam is nasal administration of medicated oil or liquid medicine.nasal therapy can be used for healing desease of the head, throat, neck. It is main procedure where patient lies on his back with his head thrown back, supported by a pillow under the neck. The medicine is administered with dropper in each nostril. Then several times the patient should sniff the oil up, while gently closing and releasing the nostril opening with index finger and thumb. The oil should be inhaled deeply.

Shirodhara begins with Shiroabhyangam or head massage followed by whole body massage or Abhyangam. After this, a person is asked to close his/her eyes closed. Slowly medicated oil is preheated to the required temperature and poured into the Dhara pot. Then from the pot, the oil is slowly allowed to flow on the forehead from a certain height. This is continued for a specific period of time. The oil is poured continuously as a stream and in an oscillating manner. A light head massage during the procedure is given.

Thalam is an Ayurvedic therapy in which the individual's head will be covered with herbal paste, and medicated Ayurvedic oil will be poured in steady flow onto the forehead. It is an effective therapeutic remedy for problems relating to nervous system and mental disorders.

Thalapothichil is a special procedure of application of medicated paste on the head. It is the traditional Ayurveda treatment which is very effective in various psychosomatic disorders. It falls in the category of cooling treatments. Thalapothichil is a specialized Ayurvedic procedure used to treat various ailments like scalp disorders, neurological disorders etc. The person is made to sit in an easy position. A gentle oil massage is given to the head with specific medicated oil. An herbal paste is freshly prepared by cooking it with buttermilk after carefully assessing the condition of the person. The paste is applied over the scalp in a layer of thickness of about 0.5 to 1 centimeter, leaving a small central portion. Medicated oil is filled in this groove. The paste is then covered with leaves (plantain or lotus leaf) and cloth leaving the groove open. At the end of the procedure, the paste is removed; a gentle head massage is given.

Tharpanam in ayurveda is a treatment of rejuvenation for pitta organ or eyes. It is used to treat various problems related to the eyes such as strain, irritation, pain,etc. In Ayurvedic tharpanam the ghee or medicated oil with Brimhana Dravyas is retained over the eyes. The eyes are bordered with a thick herbal combination made of urad dal or black gram flour that prevents seepage of oil. The medicated oil penetrates into the eyes and draws out the toxins from eye tissue.

In general terms, the application of herbal paste on the body to enhance the tone, texture, and glow of skin. • It starts with full body Abhyangam with oil , wherein massage is done with different strokes lubricating the skin and improving the circulation. • Post the Abhyang, ubtan paste made in milk, rose water, etc. is applied over the body. This application is allowed to dry. • This is followed by a swedan procedure wherein steam is given, this helps in opening up the skin pores facilitating the elimination of waste products through sweat. • The combination of herbs for Ubtan is chosen as per the skin type of the individual

• The herbal powder/ paste is rubbed on the body in different strokes covering the whole body. • The direction is such that it rubs off the dead skin and also opens up the skin pores. • Post Udvartan, steam is given to induce sweating. • Different combinations of herbal powders/paste are chosen depending on the individual requirements. • Udvartan improves the lymphatic drainage, facilitates removal of stubborn lipose tissue (fat), at the same time increases the circulation. • This accelerates inch loss and improves the skin texture and glow.

Upanaham is a part of swedam in panchakarma treatment in ayurveda. There are some diseases which need external application of medicines. Medicated oil is applied over the affected are. A herbal paste, as per the instruction of the physician, is made and then applied over it. Herbal leaves are placed over the paste and with the help of cotton cloth it is bandaged.

First experience at the Birla Ayurveda Centre, and also with the session. It's a calm and relaxing therapy session and definitely recommended.
